The ancient Indian sport of Circle Kabaddi filled the field at Rogers Centre today (August 16) as teams from six international countries took part in the Canada Kabaddi Cup 2009. India, USA, England, Norway, Canada East and Canada West all competed for the highly coveted trophy.
Steeped in culture and tradition, this classic sport drew thousands of fans of all ages to the venue as spectators encouraged their teams to continue fighting hard in pursuit of the championship title.
Prior to the official competition matches getting underway, which opened with a spirited game between USA and India, the Under 21 teams went head-to-head showcasing their skills and athleticism as Kabaddi players of the future.
Official speeches, comedic presentations and even a Bhangra cultural dance entertained the spectators throughout the day as well. Originating in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan as folk dance, bhangra has flourished in popularity around the world through its inclusion in pop music and film soundtracks.
Making a stop at Rogers Centre, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff provided words of encouragement to the participants while marveling at the wonderful community turnout and buzz felt in the building. Shortly thereafter, India faced Canada West (B.C.) in the first semifinal before Canada East (Ontario) took on England in the second semifinal.
It was an all Canadian showdown in the finals as Team Canada East (Ontario) took on Team Canada West (B.C.) in a heated battle. Displaying the determination of past Kabaddi champions, the match was a seesaw affair that was ultimately decided by a refereeās call.
Despite appearing to be extended into a sudden death overtime period, the referees gathered at centre-circle to deliberate on a few close plays as both teams requested reviews after the fact. When the dust settled, Team Canada East (Ontario) hoisted the trophy in victory.
Pride was also on the line during a show match between Toronto and Peel Police teams. Toronto ran away with the victory, and the trophy, in the friendly competition.
