VINTAGE CARS AND COOL TUNES MAKE RETURN TO GRAND STAGE

The best of the classics is back under one roof.

Malt shops were the place to hang out, poodle skirts were hip and a drive-in movie theatre got you the best seat in the house. Without a doubt, the 1950’s & 1960’s embraced spontaneity, youthful enthusiasm and new ideas with vigor. These two decades brought about immense cultural change and Legends of the 50s & 60s celebrates the best of the golden oldies in music and lifestyle this Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Rogers Centre.

Wanting to break free from the constraints of their parents’ musical tastes, youth gravitated towards a bluesy sound that was all the rage. Rock & Roll entered the lexicon of modern music and gathered momentum through the 50’s and branched out to encompass soul, pop and blues in the 60’s. Elvis Presley swiveled his hips to the shock of Ed Sullivan and the delight of his female fans, while Motown Records played a ground-breaking role in the racial integration of popular music.

This musical revolution created a number of popular artists and sounds. Legends of the 50s & 60s brings some of the best and the brightest to the stage for a memorable evening. Starting at 8:00 p.m., fan favourites Chubby Checker, the King of the Twist, Frankie Avalon, teen idol, musician and actor, The Shirelles, rock & roll’s first female supergroup, and Mary Wilson, vocal powerhouse of The Supremes and Motown Soul, step back in time and perform their hit songs.

An icon of 50’s and 60’s design, American automobiles became a status symbol and the epitome of cool. A muscle car was the automobile of choice for every teenage guy and with a little fine-tuning could be turned into an unreal hot-rod. For drag races on a Saturday night every car was chrome-plated and ready to burn rubber. Between the Barracuda, the Corvette and the Mustang, these cars added vitality, style and became symbols of their time.

From 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Rogers Centre transforms into a vintage car wonderland. Fins and white wheels will be on display, along with classic cars that will make you flip. Swing on by, before the concert begins to experience the 1950’s and the 1960’s to the fullest.
